HSE University students have won four major information-security competitions. HSE teams took first place in the ENOWARS, RCTF, CTFZone, and PSUTI CTF tournaments, with four teams finishing in the top ten at the last of these. Next up are the in-person finals of international tournaments in Romania, India, and Saudi Arabia, for which our sportsmen have qualified.

The first-ever International Space Games (ISG) have officially opened in Moscow. Students and early-career lecturers from seven countries—China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan—have travelled to Russia to take part in this unique new engineering competition. The Russian team consists of students from leading Russian universities who have participated in, won prizes at, or won the National Technology Olympiad (NTO). HSE University is the operator of the ISG.

In mid-October 2026, HSE University held its first scientific conference on Stochastics, Artificial Intelligence, and Mathematical Finance (SAIMF 26). HSE researchers, leading mathematicians, and financial sector specialists discussed fundamental mathematical problems, modern artificial intelligence methods, and their applications in finance.

On October 26, the first International Space Games will kick off in Moscow. Teams from Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan will take part in this new engineering project. Participants will live and work in a simulation of a real space mission. HSE University is acting as project initiator and operator.

On October 19, 2026, the second international research seminar in the series ‘Family Policy and Fertility Support Policies in Northeast Asian Countries’ took place. Held as part of the university project ‘Developing Interdisciplinary Research into Human Potential,’ the event focused on the relationship between housing affordability, family behaviour, and fertility in Russia and South Korea. It was organised by the HSE Institute for Social Policy, the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, and the Seoul National University Population Policy Research Centre (Republic of Korea).

Sixth-generation (6G) communication will require new devices and technologies, and a development team at HSE University is working on solutions in microelectronics and photonics as part of the university's Strategic Technological Project 'Trusted 6G Communication Systems Technology Suite.' In 2026, the researchers developed models and prototypes of devices, experimentally tested their characteristics, and agreed with industrial partners on formats for collaboration. The HSE News Service spoke with project coordinator Alexander Shurakov, Associate Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering of HSE MIEM, about how these developments can move beyond the laboratory.

The HSE Academic Council has reviewed the results of the recently completed admissions campaign. Around 21,000 students have been admitted to state-funded and fee-paying undergraduate, specialist degree, and master’s programmes.

On September 26 and 27, 2026, students from the HSE Lyceum, university students, staff and alumni from HSE University campuses in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, and HSE Online took part in the 2026 Moscow Marathon. Over the two days, HSE participants completed the 10 km and 42.2 km races, competed in the student relay, cheered on runners along the course, and met up at the HSE tent in the finish area.

Researchers from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University, in collaboration with international colleagues, have shown that by the end of first grade, children have already developed an important eye-movement skill for reading. Like adults, they quickly adapt the length of their saccades—rapid eye movements—to the length of words in sentences. However, children’s gazes tend to land near the beginnings of words, whereas adults tend to target areas closer to the centres of words. The more fluent the reading, the closer saccadic targeting is to the word centre. The study findings have been published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology.

The AI and Digital Science Instituteat HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) presented a multi-agent hardware–software system that analyses the electrical parameters of industrial equipment and helps detect signs of malfunction at an early stage. The solution is designed to shift maintenance from repairing equipment after failures occur to predicting its condition and scheduling interventions before an emergency arises. The system was presented at the 4^th Professional Conference for the IT and Engineering Community in the Oil and Gas Industry.
